An old weight lifting injury is bothering my lower back. What should I do?

Postby garwyli91 » Fri Jun 22, 2012 2:01 pm

I was a discus thrower on my college's track and field team. Back in 2009 I hurt my lower back doing Olympic-style power lifting. The athletic trainer said I messed up one of the facet joints in my lower back and that the joint was actually out of place. I probably should have seen an actual doctor after the injury but I never did. I spent every day in the training room rehabbing my injury. I was able to finish out the season and actually had a personal best in discus despite being injured.

Three years later and I still have problems with my lower back. I must have tweaked it doing yard work this past weekend. I didn't feel anything when it happened. But I woke up one morning and could hardly get out of bed. I have a shooting pain in my lower back.

Is there anything I should be doing for back pain? And will my back ever get better or have I permanently damaged my back/spine? If I need to see a doctor, what type of doctor deals with back pain/injuries?

Thanks for your advice!
