Three months ago, I moved out of an apartment that I shared with a friend and my now-ex-boyfriend. I was not signed off the lease because my ex refused. With that being said, the leasing manager was aware that I moved out. I know that I am still financially responsible since I was not signed off.
Beginning of this month, both my friend and my ex moved out of the apartment. They did not tell me this was happening, I had no knowledge until 2 weeks after when I asked my friend for a copy of the lease. Friend told me they put in notice and owe the termination fee. Since I am still part financially responsible, I wanted to obtain copies of everything. I visited the office immediately, and instead I was told that it was an eviction process. Apparently, there wasn't clear communication because my friend was sure it was an early termination agreement. (I don't know what the whole deal was between my friend and my ex, clearly something went wrong...) Since there is no paperwork proof of this, it is going to be considered an eviction. Anyways, manager told me she sent the deputy to evict them but my roommates had "fled". Here is my concern:
I understood the entire situation, and yes it sucks. Since I was not living there during the time, and manager was aware I no longer lived there, I asked for copies of the amount do and the eviction letter (for my records). She said "you owe ___" I then said "ok, can I have that in writing" She said "I am telling you the amount" I explained that I want it in writing for my records. She refused to write anything down and said everything has been sent to the attorney and she would be more than happy to give me the attorney information. I said ok, and I also asked for a copy of the lease since my ex was the one holding it and my friend did not have a copy either. She said "sure" got up, sat back down, and said "no its in storage, ill mail it to you". I had to give her my address because she had none of my current information. As I wrote it I said "I would love to get the attorney information as well" I look up at her at she just looks at me. I asked again "Can I have the information" and she said "yes. it will be mailed". I said "....okay... um, I wish you could be a little more assuring and professional about this" and she snapped at me and said "remember our last conversation over the phone? you cursed at me." (This never happened, I was so confused because the last time I spoke to her was about a copy of the key to the apt that I legally had the right to and she was no help, so I passed the phone to my father) She then said "get out of my office now, goodbye"
I left calmly yet still confused. I have no copies of anything and I dont feel assured that I am going to get anything in the mail. Does anybody have any advice or helpful information for me? I know the obvious.. like I know I still will have all this crap going for me because I was still on the lease, but the fact I couldnt get anything in writing?? Someone said if I don't receive any certified letter in the mail from them, I will not be held responsible, Is this true? I just want to know what the heck is going on, have charges in writing, and all the other necessary documents :(
