Are employers REQUIRED to allow an employee to eat if the employee is DIABETIC?
I live in michigan
heres the current "break" law

"Are employees required by law to have a meal or break period?
Agency: Energy, Labor & Economic Growth

Employees under 18 years of age may not work more than 5 continuous hours without a 30 minute uninterrupted rest period. There are no requirements for breaks, meal or rest periods for employees 18 years of age or older."

Now i am 18, but i have a health condition that requires me to eat on occasions:DIABETES. Considering me not eating dangerous if i were to become hypoglycemic, are they required to let me eat? or is it just a thing they should do...but not legally required?

I am asking today because i worked an 8 hr day and I wasnt allowed to eat. Manager said there wasnt enough time for me to quickly eat a burrito. My sugar became really low and a co-worker found me on the floor in the storage room.

Been diabetic since '93, at this current job since '08. They still dont get it :(

Asked and answered. Put your employer on notice that you are diabetic and require a break to eat a small meal. See answer to previous question.

The ADA is based on reasonable accomodation and the employer gets to determine what is reasonable. Also, the ADA is only enforceable with companies who have more than 5 employees in a worksite.

Here's some more information:
If you work in a factory and the machine has to be shut down if you are not working on it, it's probably not reasonable to allow you more than the standard breaks.

If you work at a desk and can eat a power bar while doing your job, that would be reasonable.
