Are shift end times required on employee schedule in FL?

Postby hewlett » Sat Dec 17, 2011 5:27 pm

My girlfriend works in a fast food type restaurant that generally treats its employees terribly. Recently, they decided it was a good idea to only have shift start times on the schedule, and no end times. Now nobody knows how long their shifts will be, and it makes it impossible to plan anything on a day where she has to work. They refuse to even give her some idea of when her shift might be over. What I want to know is, is this a violation of some sort of labor law or something? It seems to me like it definitely would be. My girlfriend thinks her only option to improve her working conditions is to find a new job, but she's been trying for a while anyway, and it's difficult. Is there maybe something she could do that would legally force the managers to include shift end times on the schedule. This is in the state of Florida I'm concerned about. Thanks in advance!

NO, in fact there is no law in Florida or any other state that mandates a schedule be used at all.....

a schedule is a tool employers use to control labor cost, ensure adequate staffing, and communicate their staffing needs to their employees, there is no law that says that tool must even be used....

successful fast-food restaurants and retail outlets know how valuable their employees are, and successful businesses treat their good employees with respect.....
again 'Heather' makes a generalized statement that can not be backed up.....

Legally they don't' have to have a schedule at all. If they choose to manage their business in a way that doesn't agree with their employees, then they will find themselves hiring and training all new employees.

So they are creating their own problem in that because they aren't managing their labor pool effectively, and are going to end up with frustrated employees and crappy service.

if she is being paid for the hours she works that is all that is required by law, while that is one of the chief complaints with fast food just realize that she will not have to work there forever.

No shift end times are not required on an employee schedule. Your girlfriend cannot do anything to force the managers to include shift end times on the schedule. Fast food restaurants and retail stores are not known for treating their employees like valued individuals. Your girlfriend can start looking for a new job if she is not happy with things. The manager is doing nothing wrong by leaving the shift open ended.

There is no law that says how many hours an employee can work in any state except for certain occupations. As fast food is for the majority of employees a temporary job until something better comes along , it is not a career position for most people ,the employers pay them minimum wage ,no benefits and for the most part treat them with little dignity and respect as you can see.
