Can I still get a work study if I didn't qualify for federal aid?

Postby bocley » Fri Dec 16, 2011 7:10 pm

Aside from applying for a butt-load of scholarships, I'm looking to ease my tuition cost next semester at my community college and I would prefer to see about a work study rather than a part-time job because they are more understanding of your study habits and DON'T schedule you when you're supposed to be at school.

I do not qualify for student aid on my fafsa because I am not old enough to be a dependent even though I don't live at home and I am not going to try and get special permission for aid this year since my mother illegally claimed me on her taxes this past season. My efc was 37k- I wasn't sure to laugh or cry because they don't count the consumer debt my mother accumulated from raising several kids on her own and she made many mistakes- she only JUST started making good money. Theres no way she can help me.

Is there any way I could still be awarded a work study like if I provided proof of my situation? I know students that typically do get aid at my CC don't even look at a work study because it is taken out of their aid and they don't see the point in working when they have free money, so is there even a chance for me? Is there anything else I should look at or know?
I will talk to my schools office when the time comes, right now I am doing initial research. I would appreciate all you know on the subject.

I don't know if it's the same everywhere, but at my school people can request work-study if they didn't qualify for it according to FAFSA. It must be at the beginning of the semester and it's on a first-come first-serve basis! You may be out of luck for this semester (possibly this year). Most schools have a deadline. My schools deadline was October 13th. After that date, if one has yet to get a job, the work-study is canceled.

Or you could just look for an on-campus job. One does not need work-study for that.

I would say go directly to student employment services and ask because you have valid reason to be able to qualify for work study. You may not qualify even with reason, but they can help you find a job that fits your schedule.

If you didn't qualify for a Pell grant, it's highly unlikely you'll qualify for federal work-study. It's reserved for students with the lowest EFCs.

If your FASFA report didn't say you qualified for it, then no.

My school was like "Kelso's" where anyone who wanted it could get get work-study. The school actually guaranteed positions to all students who qualified - which basically meant submitting an application. Your school may or may not do this, but it's definitely worth asking.

I agree you may be pretty late for this semester, but at least you'll be well-prepared for next semester.
