Can the Florida DMV sell your information?

Postby melville » Sat Mar 10, 2012 11:01 am

I got a speeding ticket a week ago. It was the first one in my entire life. I know I have to pay my fine, take the class, etc. I hate driving, but anyway....

About 4-5 after the ticket I got an ad for a company that does the "traffic class" I have to take. At first I thought it was a fluke. Now I'm gettting more and more ads in my mailbox from different companies!! So what the heck is going on? Did the State of Florida sell my information to these people? How do they even have the right to do that?

they do not sell it, BUT your ticket information is public knowledge and the "ambulance chaser" type of people get that list every day / couple of days and send out the flyer's.

My husband got a ticket in NJ when he was a truck driver and we got shed loads of them in the mail [we also live in Florida] so I was a bit put out as well, seems the info is out there for any one to view.

More states are doing this to help prop up sagging budgets. Insurance companies are happy to pay - as it helps them justify rate increases.

On this one transaction the Florida DMV made $63 million dollars to sell the data.
