Career suggestions for my abilities and interests?

Postby anson34 » Sun Nov 20, 2011 12:48 pm

I'm a sophomore in college and I'm still having trouble feeling my way to a career.

Right now, I'm double majoring in German (I'm fluent and already have a lot of credits) and Chemistry because the Pharmaceutical route sounds like it might work.

Other areas I'm interested in and excel at are Math (I got A's in all 3 Calculus classes), Biology, Autism (I have Asperger's Syndrome), Politics, Debate, and Law.

I have a feeling I'll end up working in Medical or Science areas but I know that my job would revolve around seniors a lot and I don't think that's what I want to be doing.

The Law is interesting and I was thinking maybe Medical Malpractice Attorney but I think poorly of those people because of the unnecessary problems they sometimes cause.

I'm looking for a respectable career I'd be good at, at least somewhat enjoy doing, and be able to pay my rent with. Suggestions?

Your personal Asperger's may be a major influence of finding your best niche.
(I have it too, but mine comes with *no* foreign language skills!)

How are you with crowds, or strange environments?
Are you OK, or easily frustrated, working in a group or committee?

German with good chemistry/maths and interest in law...
Translator to pharmaceutical and chemical businesses? English or American ones in Germany, or German ones vice-versa...

I found my niche in optometry which worked well for nearly 30 years. I'm now looking to start again, working in autism awareness/support/mentoring.

Check out the http://www.bls.gov/oco/ Occupational Handbook to see what career fields that you like will be most in demand over the next decade. That will help you narrow down the choices. You can do chemistry and work in a lab environment and not have to deal with the actual patients. A hospital pharmacist is a hard position to get, but you don't deal with the public there either - just hospital staff.

I think that politics and debate don't lead to many stable jobs.
Good luck to you.
