Christians, why did Jesus command you to own slaves?

Postby fyfe » Tue Dec 27, 2011 5:42 am

"Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ." (Ephesians 6:5 NLT)

"Slaves, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh." (1 Peter 2:18)

"All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect, so that God's name and our teaching may not be slandered." (1 Timothy 6:1)

"Students are not greater than their teacher, and slaves are not greater than their master." (Matthew 10:24)

In these verses we see Jesus telling slaves they have to submit to their masters even if the masters are abusive, and that slaves are not equal human beings. He also said to submit even if the slaves fear for their lives.

Hey! Don't mock slavery. It's God's holy institution!

Who knows... perhaps it's along the lines of why Muslims have such a huge problem with human trafficking, regarding women as property and things of monetary value...

I know that reading is strongly discouraged in Islam, but trust me, you will be much better off if you read on your own than if you just force yourself into lockstep with your masters.

Slavery has been common in our world until about 150 years ago.

People often sold themselves into slavery to pay off debts.

Until Jesus said something about it, slaves were treated like property, beaten and killed.

You also understand that it was a Christian fighting his entire life to end slavery whom is credited with it's end, do you not?

god didn't command people to own slaves

ephesians 6:6
god is telling christians if you find your self a slave then obey your master as if you were obeying god

same way with 1 peter 2:18 and 1 timothy 6:1

god says to obey those who rule over you
not to be belligerent or fighting against them

that is not a endorsement to go out and own slaves

jesus did not say slaves were not equal to human beings that is your own interpretation which is in error
