It would simply be a stupid question to ask if there is discrimination and racism against anyone, may they be white black pink purple, man women, alien species. What ever color, ethnic background, gender, religion, creed, or nationality you happen to be, the chances are that you have been the victim of discrimination as well as you probably have caused the oppression of another person based on one of those same classifications.
There is an an argument out there that says that racism against white people is not possible. They claim that since white people have all the power (stereotype), and affirmative action policies and racial quotas are imposed on white people by white people, so in this scenario the condition of racism does not meet the requirements.
This argument I believe is rather near sighted and foolish, and nothing more then an attempt to justify unjust entitlements. Are all white people in power? No (the majority of white people are not in power, because power is held by a few who seek to gain more power for themselves). Are all minorities out of power? no this is a reality. (our president for example, though minorities control less of the 1% then white people do, they still have a presence.) I could get into an entire debate over how minorities actually oppress themselves more then the majority, but that is going off the subject.
Discriminating is an essential part of live, in fact we must learn to discriminate to survive as human beings. We need to be able to tell the difference between rat poison and taco mix, between a 3 alarm fire and orange crayon murals. This is some basic examples of discrimination while others may include discriminating against sex offenders by making them register in the community they live.
Some discrimination is the kind that harms other people, and for the most part federal law mandates that there are protected classes that exist which discriminating against that class is illegal. The only person in America that is not on that list is white males under the age of 40. Those people are told to fend for themselves and if you are discriminated against based on the color of your skin, deal with it, because its not illegal.
The fact remains that discriminating against someone based on something they can't change is wrong, no matter how you try to justify it, and discriminating someone based on the color of their skin is racism, even if the person oppressing the other person is of the same color.
I was looking for a temp job as a clerk at Express Personal 4 years ago. I have 10 years of clerical experience, but I'm also six foot 2 250 pounds and placed NCAA D1 football. They refused to take my resume for the temp clerical positions and instead wanted me to do manual labor jobs. I explained to them that my experience more then qualifies me for those positions. I was then told that they save those jobs for women and i don't quality.
What she was telling me is that i don't quality because I'm a man, she was discriminating against me because of my gender. If i was a protected class she would broken the law, but since I am not its O.K., but doesn't make it right.
the entire notion that you can't be racist to someone else based on stereotypes and preconceived notions of how our society is split up in terms of demographics is simply wrong, lacks substance, and is fuel for justifying policy that divides a country more.
Can you discriminate against white people, is there such a thing as racism for the majority? Yes and while your at it, be careful of calling anyone the majority before you take the time to get to know them.
