Few questions about "Street Sweeper" shotguns and "DD" laws.?

Postby kendon19 » Tue Jul 31, 2012 3:20 pm

I recently got interested in having a revolving 410 for small game so I went online and did my google searching when I came across a monster called a "Street Sweeper". I would love to own this just for the fun of owning it but can somebody please explain a few things to me?

I live in TN where firearms don't require registration so if I ever wanted to sell or gift one of these would I have to do it through an FFL dealer?

If I moved would I have to fill out any special paperwork to take it across stats lines?

What, if any states regulate them for possession?

Are they legal to take to any range that allows shotguns?

Are they legal to hunt with? I'd never try it but it's a question I'd like an answer to.

This one might sound dumb but being that it's a "DD" would it be legal to use for home defense? Based on what I've seen in the videos, I don't think there is anybody in their right mind who wouldn't want to use this as their primary home defense weapon.

Why exactly is it listed as a "DD"? I assume it has something to do with the fact that it looks scary, or maybe people just don't like the idea of a revolving 12 gauge... I'd really appreciate an answer to this question.

TN allows most any weapon. The South African stree sweeper is expensive. Good luck getting one. You live in TN why would you go to a range when you have miles of areas you can shoot freely in the stix.

So the DD means "Destructive Device" which is a particular classification from the ATF that makes them virtually impossible to import. It's one of the lingering legacies of the Clinton Assault Weapons Ban. I believe that anything classified as a Destructive Device is considered illegal to hunt with.

"Q: Does the registered owner of a destructive device, machine gun, short-barreled shotgun, or short-barreled rifle need authorization to lawfully transport such items interstate?

Yes, unless the owner is a qualified dealer, manufacturer or importer, or a licensed collector transporting only curios or relics. Prior approval must be obtained, even if the move is temporary. Approval is requested by either submitting a letter containing all necessary information, or by submitting ATF Form 5320.20 to the Bureau of ATF, NFA Branch. Possession of the firearms also must comply with all State and local laws.

[18 U.S.C. 922(a) (4), 27 CFR 478.28]"

Thinkingblade

Yet another ridiculous gun law.

It's 2012. This is better than the sweeper without the DD issues....
