Have you ever put on medications that interact with each other?

Postby maddox » Sat Apr 09, 2011 10:43 am

I think you did the right thing, I would of done that too. Sometimes doctors don't always pay attention to what they prescribe, and its good that you did some research. Its always a good thing to ask your pharmacist questions before you take a medicine, usually they are the ones who will know everything about it. At my pharmacy whenever I get my meds. they always give me printouts on all my medicines, they tell what its for, and what the side effects are if any, and if it can interact with other meds. Your pharmacy should do that too.

I think you did the right thing. I do not believe that the doctors always look at all the medication one is taking before perscribing another. I also do no believe tthat all the doctors even worry about it. Like anything else its hard to find good caring doctors these days. Everyone is worried about getting you in and out and cashing those checks. I am very curious what kind of response if any the doctor will give you or the pharmacy. Your husband is like all of us men. Figure the doctors all know everything and live by their every word. I have long learned that is not always the case. Good for you.

Often people put their trust in their doctors because they think that the doctor is so much smarter than they are. The truth is that doctors make mistakes too. Doctors see a lot of patients every day and they can't be expected to remember all the details for each one. It is up to the patient to make sure they understand their own treatments. All my family and friends come to me every time they are prescribed a new medicine or if they have a pill that has gotten separated from its bottle. I have a site where I look up medications by the markings on the pills and it provides pictures and a monograph of what the pill is for and what it reacts with. My family has learned to rely on me to make sure that the medicines they get are the ones they should take. Yes you did right by getting involved.

You did the right thing. While we trust doctors since they have passed the qualifications for their profession, we have to admit that there are also many cases of medical malpractice. So when it involves our health, we must also be pro-active. Like what you did, doing research on those meds. Medications that don't go well with each other can cost somebody's life.

it just shows that all these companies care about is their profits. they don't really care about the effects these meds have on people's lives. because if they did, they would have advised you on these interactions.

It is strange that the chemist or pharmacist did not pick this up when he was filling the prescriptions, because you say that he does know you. My partner and I do not use prescription meciations thankfully but my brother and his wife do. I know they always go to the same chemist because they said he makes sure they know what thet are taking etc. It is hard for you if your husband does not want you to do anything about the medication he is taking. However if there is a potential for a abd interaction, then that does need to be addressed. Often when you read through the possible side effects, the worse ones seem to jump out at you. With regard to something like a possible kidney problem, then the Doctor needs to ensure that your husband has reguar blood tests. At least that way they will have a baseline reading and can compare future tests to see if that reading has changed in any way. It will not stop it from happening of course but it does allow treatment to be given before the problem becomes a major one. There are times when the doctor has to weigh up the benefits versus the risks. It might be that these particular medications are the best for your husband and his health issues. The risk of not taking them is much higher than the risks of taking them in combination. If that is the case, then the Doctor should have explained that to your husband when he saw him. Do you go to the Doctor with your husband? If not, then would you be prepared to go with him, providing of course that your husband would agree to that. It might at least solve a few problems as you could ask the questions and at least know what is going on. Good luck dianel and I hope that it works out well, with no nasty side effects to your husband's health.
