You should keep in mind that if you stop going to court, they will have a judgment against you and can start garnishing your bank account or your job. Bankruptcy might be a good option for you but without all your info, I would not be able to advise you other than to tell you once the bankruptcy case is filed, the creditor cannot continue to try to collect this debt. If you do receive a discharge in bankruptcy, then you would no longer owe the debt (with a few exceptions). So I would contact your local attorney for bankruptcy. I can only give you advice for Kansas or Missouri cases. I know I offer a free consultation. Legal Aid normally is not taking on cases unless you are trying to avoid foreclosure. You should contact the local Legal Aid office to see what cases they are taking. If you are in the Kansas City area, contact my office at 816-479-2700 for your free consultation. Keep in mind, that you might be able to use a tax refund to pay your attorney fees. We are located at 721 NE 76th St., Kansas City, MO.
