How do I complete my last year of law school at a different school?

Postby teyo » Tue Jun 12, 2012 8:36 pm

I am at a top ten law school and want to finish in MN to be with my family. How do I do this? If I want to do this this fall am I too late?

Thanks.

This may not be possible. Some law schools don't accept transfer students at all, so you'll need to check those in MN and see if they do. Those that do may accept only a limited number of the credits you've done so far - I've seen some take zero credits, some take only nine, etc. So you'll need to check that. And it's very late for you to be transferring. You can try, but you may have missed a lot of deadlines. You'll need to check that as well.

What's going on, and how much time do you need? It might be possible for you to take a year off from your law school, if something is going on back at home, and you can return next year. You can ask about taking a leave of absence, if that would help you.

I doubt this would be possible - and yes, you are definitely too late for the fall. Law schools aren't going to want to give you a degree with the school's name on it when 2/3 (approximately) of your credits are coming from another school. Most law schools that accept transfers only do so after 1L year.

I agree with "Roaring" that a leave of absence might be a good idea if you have some family issues to deal with. You could also look at taking a visiting semester at a MN law school (assuming your current school allows this) and if your school has a practical semester requirement/component you could complete this with a firm or organization in MN.
