How long does the government require employers to keep resumes?

i read awhile ago online that its 6 months, but today someone refused to take my resume and told me they were told to refuse by their manager cuz apparently the law requires them to keep it for 7 YEARS! those two time amounts are VERY different. can anyone give me a straight honest reliable answer? who is giving me the bull here?? i know you cant believe everything you find online.... and thats SUCH a big difference!!! :O 6 months vs. 7 yrs... :O..... but why the heck would you hold it for 7 years??
