How should I go about becoming an immigration lawyer? Is it possible for me at this point?

Postby jarel » Thu Jul 05, 2012 2:20 am

I am a recent college graduate with a Bachelors degree in Communication and a minor in Biology. For most of my time in college I was unsure of the career path I wanted to take and by the time I started becoming interested in law it was towards the end of my 4 years. I am now trying to figure out what steps I will have to take at this point in order for me to possibly become an immigration lawyer. Is this still an option for me? Thank you very much for any advice.

There are no prerequisite college courses to be admitted to law school. Lawyers have backgrounds from all types of majors, from engineering, political science, biology, mathematics, French, social work, any major. You would need to take the LSAT and be admitted to a U.S. law school. Law school is 3 years full-time. While in law school, you do not pick a major like you did as an undergrad. You have core classes which are usually completed in the 1st year and then for the next two years you pretty much choose any classes that interest you.

However, if you are sure immigration is your interest, then you can take classes about immigration. If you want real exposure, I would recommend looking for a law school that runs an immigration clinic, such as NYU (http://www.law.nyu.edu/academics/clinics/Year/immigrantrights/index.htm). You can run an internet search for law schools and immigration clinics.

You could also try to work as a legal assistant in an immigration law firm.

It's not impossible or too late. You'll need to do well on LSAT tests and get admitted to and complete law school.
