I changed insurance company it lapsed over 30 days without notice?

Postby tanishia » Sat Mar 10, 2012 5:36 pm

at the DMV. I was unaware of the situation and I finally got a dumb az postcard that was given to me on the 7th of Febuary. Its now, March 9.. grr. So I ended up verifying my insurance online with the access code they gave me. I talked to my insurance agent and they said I would have to pay $250 fine for not verifying it earlier blah-blah lame law if you ask me. I seriosuly thought this was the new insurance agents job to handle it. Then to top it off late postcard. Where it was I dunno! OK, I verified it and the status now on DMV says

"RESULTED IN SANCTION - PENDING
Insurance Lapse: - 2011-12-19 to 2012-01-08 "

So my question after providing some information will I have to go to the DMV in person to pay for any fee. Or will I just get a bill by the mail or pay online? I ask cause the customer service by phone takes ages.. hope someone been through this or has knowledge on this. Don't want to head up to the DMV office for nothing if I already verified my insurance online via their postcard thingamagig. The question now is about the bill. $$ Thanks.

If you just changed companies and always paid your bill, then it was not your fault.
And they can't charge you anything when it is not your fault.
There can be no law penalizing verification, but only lack of financial responsibility.
Yes, it is reasonable to believe it is the agent's duty.
Stick to your beliefs in what is right.
Don't let them manipulate you.
If they give you a hard time, demand to see the laws involved.
I don't believe you should have to pay anything.

It appears that AZ is serious about mandatory car insurance. In almost every state, auto insurance is mandatory, but most states do not verify, but "take your word" that you have insurance, unless if in an accident and/or ticket and then have to submit proof.

It appears that most likely you will need to go in person and provide proof of insurance. But according to this site, states $50 reinstatement fee, unless they have other fees that the agent was talking about.

I am a little bit confused about if you were insured when the other company lapsed? If say for instance that you cancelled your old policy on 12/19/11 and got a new policy effective 12/19/11, you were never lapsed and that is the way you should always buy insurance, to have one stop and the other start on the same day.

Call your agent back and ask that he provide proof of your insurance and effective date. This is his job and take to the DMV, and pay what fines are owed. Otherwise, they can suspend your registration and "possibly" your license if you don't comply.

good luck

To be honest with you, there are not a site that will offer you "cheap insurance".But that does not mean you can not save money.Go to : http://EliteAutoIns.com and register. They are an insurance comparison site. The main pros of this site is that they work not only with national, but also with local providers, which mean you may save more in your area. All you need to do is to complete their short form and in the next 24 hours you will receive a lot of offers.

Here are more tips on how to save on your car insurance:

- Keep good credit report. If your score is not good, try to increase and report that to your insurance company
- Ask for group discount
- Keep good driving records
- Buy theft protection devices for your car
- Buy more insurances from one company
- Compare car insurance rates every 6 months.(You can use the site I've mentioned.)
