Do you know what 'The White Man's Burden' means? It means that the Europeans designated themselves as official Civilizers of Humanity and saw it as their responsibility to civilize the barbaric races of America and Africa with European knowledge.

Social Darwinism is believing that certain races are more superior than others, shown in 'The White Man's Burden' because Europeans sincerely believed they were more enlightened than other races. It's easy to believe that Social Darwinism and The White Man's Burden are 18th, 19th and early 20th century phenomena but look at the world around us... it's still everywhere. The United States and the European Union interfering with the state affairs of Africa, the US are the self-appointed "World Police"... Europeans still believe they know best.

And as someone who took a poetry and poetic theory paper in university, here's a trick when attempting to 'decode' poems: there is no one single meaning in a poem. There is no absolute 'truth' to be discovered in a poem. The meaning of a poem is created by the reader, if 30 different people in your class study a single poem, you will come up with 30 unique interpretations. Do your basic research of Social Darwinism and what The White Man's Burden means, and then navigate your way through the poem using your own personal experiences to shape the reading.
