I got a ticket for speeding on a motorcycle?

Postby parnell » Mon Apr 23, 2012 3:17 am

So its 10 41 at night, and im cruising down a street. No cars to be seen . a yellow light appears and i exhilarate to make it. i made it and like 5 secs later a cop car pulls me over. he said i was going 70 when the speed limit is 40. and he gave me slack since im 17(pass my curfew time) they gave me a ticket and said something will come in the mail. What should i do? does that mean my insurance rate will go up? or what if i clear it and it wont stay on my record? what to do? i really don1t want my insurance rate to go up

You are 17.

That cop has watched lots of 17 years olds being scraped off the pavement after being in a motorcycle accident from excessive speed.

My advice as a guy who drives a motorcycle.

Take your punishment and learn from your mistake.

Driving a bike will likely be the most dangerous thing you will ever do

you just learned a lesson... your insurance rates will go up ... next time don't speed up to run a yellow light... that way the cops won't give you a ticket ... and it stays on your record for 3 years ... 5 years in some states

It really depends on the state you live in. In most states, there is a point system that affects both your license (get enough points and you lose it) and your insurance rates. In some states, young drivers have extra restrictions on the number of points or tickets they can get without losing their license. Some states allow you to take a voluntary traffic school course to have a ticket expunged from your record. Your state's DMV website should have information that can help you.

Also, it's usually a good idea to go to court on a traffic ticket. Often, the prosecutor will offer a plea bargain to a lesser charge that will have fewer points and less impact on your insurance rates. Dress nicely and bring a parent if possible to show how seriously you take it, and talk to the prosecutor and the officer.

First, you ACCELERATE when you increase speed, not 'exhilarate'. Jeez.
.
Second, you're driving like a jackass. Yellow light mean 'slow down and prepare to stop' NOT 'speed up to beat the light'. This is to keep you from killing the pedestrian in dark clothes who you don't see in the street because you're going 70 mph. That will definitely cause your insurance rate to go up, right after you finish your manslaughter sentence and pay off your massive legal bills.
.
At my age I wouldn't expect my insurance rates to go up based just on one ticket, but at your age they will expect you to keep driving like a jackass and may jack up your rates accordingly. Best to call them to find out.
