In Ontario, Canada, what labour guidelines apply to temporary seasonal employees?

Postby dubh35 » Mon Dec 19, 2011 2:17 pm

I was hired for a temporary seasonal position, for Christmas. It was supposed to be 6-8 weeks, full time night shift. I worked a few hours during the day just for training,(total of 16hrs) and the full time night shift was to start the following week.
As it turns out, they didn't have enough sales, so they won't be running a night shift afterall. This is after making me wait 3 weeks at home saying the night shift would start "next week". When it was concluded that the night shift was not going to happen, then then offered me some part time daytime hours. I am not available daytime hours; that's why I took night shift. They hired me for full time night shift.. I had already turned down another night shift full time job when they'd hired me.

I spent $70 on safety shoes, and only made $200 total while I was there! Now I came out of this with $130 in my pocket, some Frankenstein shoes I'll never wear again, no job, and no extra cash for Christmas.
I really needed the money, and I'm kicking myself that I turned down the other job.

Are there any labour laws that apply to seasonal temporary workers? It's a really big company too. They shouldn't be able to treat people that way. Shouldn't they compensate somehow? I really feel shafted.

Since "seasonal workers" fall under the same guidelines as "temporary" or "part-time" workers, you literally nothing to fall back on - and being as you "technically" never started work, you don't have any expectation of compensation.

You got your just deserved, paid for the day you worked - and quite well at that.
