I am filing for Green Card(from F-1) and I don't want to go through an attorney UNLESS I absolutely have to. Have you been through this? If so, what do you advise?

Tried many times to go around hiring an attorney but unfortunately did not work. The forms are so messy and complicated that you need his/her help just for that. Unfortunately went thru a couple of lawyers without finding a good one. Good luck!

Depends on your country of citizenship and on your employer. I have done H-1->Green Card without a lawyer, I just let my employer take care of it. Things went ok, but a bit slow. However, I don't know about F-1... are you sure you can keep the F-1 status long enough to get the Green Card(which, in my case, took 4 years)?
