Is it illegal for a minor to work where alcohol is sold?

Postby celeste » Fri Jul 06, 2012 3:42 pm

I'm 14, I live in Illinois, and was looking for a job. I got hired at a resturaunt as a hostess, not even selling the alcohol, but my school wouldn't give me a workers permit because apparently it's "illegal for anyone under 16 to work where alcohol is sold." Now, my friend lives about 25 minutes from me, he's also 14, and his school gave him a workers permit for getting a job at Walgreens, which sells both alcohol and cigarettes. This didn't seem right, so I did some investigating. I went to about 6 websites, including http://www.state.il.us/agency/idol/laws/LAW205.HTM which tells you what jobs aren't allowed (only hazardous jobs, such as quarry mining and roofing), and NONE of them said anything about it being illegal for me to work anywhere that alcohol is sold. I called the Child Labor Information number to ask, but it was after hours so I left a message. So, is my school full of **** or is it actually the law?

That's actually wrong. You can work where alcohol is sold/served. You just can't serve it.

You could work there as long as you do not come in contact with the alcohol

You should be allowed to work there for sure, it's only illegal if you are selling the alchohol or cigarettes your school screwed you over they should have given you the permit.

This seems extremely strange. It is only legal for a minor to work if they are at least the age of 15. It is also legal to work at a place that sells alcohal as long as you are not doing anything with it. Real-life example: my cousin who is turning 16 in two weeks works as a bus boy at a bar. He is not allowed to serve alcohal, or even be behind the actual bar.

I believe the law pertains to "taverns" and a restaurant comes under the heading of "tavern". A store, like Walgreen's, does not.
