Is this person posing as a "fraud" (This is a LONG read, but I really need your input. Thank you.)?

Postby aescby » Tue Jul 31, 2012 1:18 pm

I met a lady, through one of the social networking sites on the internet. She then gave me her personal email address, so that I could communicate with her via email. Our email exchanges have been going good. Her profile stated that she was from the same state as I am (Her profile also listed the "city"). Our message exchanges have been going well. She stated that she currently is in West Africa, taking care of her sick mother, who is suffering from colon cancer. She said that she would be back in America in about 12 days.

Recently, she sent me the following email (copy and pasted below):

"(My first name),

Good to hear from u again,it's nice to read mail from u and get to know more about u. I must say your mails has put a smile on my face. So how was your outing with your cousin and hope u are feeling better now? Well i was born on March 19th so my b.day has already passed, i hope we can spend yours together in the next 2 months. So concert is not really your thing? a movie sounds pretty good too though.

Well to tell u more...

Well i was raised up in Rialto,California,i lost dad when i was a kid and i am the only child. Mom raised me up ever since, she is an
afro-american and relocated back to Africa a while ago, while i was living in my dad inherited property in Stacy,MN.

I have been here in lagos west africa for some weeks now,the few friends i've met here have been nice to me and i enjoy their company. I am precisely in lagos west africa. I am 5'8 tall and like i had said earlier,i like the indoor things pretty much but the outdoor thing could be fun too like camping, going to the beach, sightseeing and all that. Well i am sure u have good folks, sometimes i always wish i have a big family too.

Otherwise, I've been having some problems here especially with my orders, mom has to go through her last chemo and the doc need some cash to continue giving her treatments, but am having problems getting my orders cashed here.

I never knew i would be having problems with this,i thought i was wiser enough to travel down here with less of physical cash and money orders. Well i wouldn't mind if there is anyway u could help me with this situation am facing right here.

I think u are a very intelligent person and i am beginning to like u a lot and would really love to meet u in person. I would keep u updated on my flight schedule as soon as i make reservations and maybe u can pick me up at the airport. Just let me know.

You are in my thoughts

(Her first name)"

I really am suspicious about the possibility that this person is pretending to be who he/she says she is. I watched a YouTube video on the internet, I think, about a lady who had met a guy on the internet, and the guy then asked her for some money assistance. She later found out (I am not exactly sure how though) that the person was posing as a "fraud".

It's a typical romance scam from Ghana or Nigeria. Cut off all contact

No real woman will ever tell a stranger her first and last name or life story over the internet. No real woman is going to give you her date of birth. If you meet on a social networking site a real woman would continue to chat with you through that site until you had actually met in person. Only a scammer wants you to start chatting through Yahoo IM or your personal email

This is a criminal looking for you to cash counterfeit money orders then send real money through Western Union

Want to prove it's a scam - write back to say that it's such a coincidence but you found out on Linkedin that a guy you went to school with is now the Consular Attache at the US Embassy in Lagos. Say that you have contacted your friend at the Embassy about her situation and they are going to contact her tomorrow as she can cash her money orders at the casher in the American Citizens Services office. Also ask for her mother's hospital name as the Embassy wants to send a representative to visit her and make sure she is receiving proper treatment. Then wait for the excuses
