Me And My Buddies Were Playing Around And Ended Up Getting Reckless Driving And Speeding Ticket. How Should I Plea

Postby shipley » Sat May 03, 2014 2:36 pm

I have no prior driving violations. There were 3 of us and only two of us got tickets. I really cannot afford an attorney and was wondering if I should go in and plea guilty and hope that I may get a reduced sentence. Why would I not get just one ticket for reckless driving instead of two tickets. Must appear in court and not sure how to handle this.

I don't know about reckless driving, but once I supposedly was caught going through a red light. I disagreed and was all set to go to court to fight the ticket. No attorney, just me. I believe it was the prosecuting attorney for the city that I had to meet with before going into court. He suggested that I just pay the fine, 1 or 2 points off my driving record for 2 yrs(instead it was going to be like 4 points for 4 years or something like that) and avoid the trial. Basically what it boiled down to is that they just wanted the $. I had no prior driving violations. That might help you too. Maybe do that, call the city attorney(or county, whatever) explain the situation, and see what they might be willing to deal. It certainly won't be a reduction in the fine(s).

See what the plea bargain offered is I don't know about reckless driving, but once I supposedly was caught going through a red light. I disagreed and was all set to go to court to fight the ticket. TurboB replied to post #1: 2 Can't add to anything Manimal said, except to ask you to please not "play around" in a speeding car. You are going to kill someone or kill yourself. Don't ever think it can't happen to you. 50 months ago

Manimal said: 1 What is common in many jurisdictions is to give an offender 2 tickets, and then at the first hearing offer to dismiss one of the tickets if you plead guilty or no contest to the other ticket. Since you have no other prior tickets, your state may allow you to take driver training in order to dismiss the other ticket. 50 months ago

go to court, be polite and remorseful. you can plead either guilty or no contest and take your medicine.  i doubt if they will be harsh with you, since this is your first time.  please, don't do that again.  you and your buddies could have hurt or kill an innocent person, besides yourselves.

attend so the points do not go on your license.  They may let you bargain it down, if this is a first offense.  It is still going to cost you a fairly good amount in fines, plus the traffic school, though.  You'd better start saving up for that now.

You should "man up" and admit the circumstances to the court and inquire if there is a driver's ed diversion you can attend so the points do not go on your license.  They may let you bargain it down, if this is a first offense.  It is still going to cost you a fairly good amount in fines, plus the traffic school, though.  You'd better start saving up for that now.
