you'd lose.
please go read about herpes and transmission of herpes. there is/used to be a fine site at columbia's medical school.
my memory of it is that the probability of transmission if someone has an active case is less than 50% per encounter. Men are far more likely than women to know if they have an active case -- it can be seen.
however, there is still a positive probability of transmission if a partner is infected by doesn't have an active case. search for "viral spalling" to read about this.
it follows that the more times you have unprotected sex, the higher the probability that you'll get the disease, even if your male friend never shows any symptoms.
since having herpes, even if in remission, is dangerous to babies -- START USING CONDOMS and keep using them ALL THE TIME until after you're married. The risks to any future children you might have that you're taking are morally unacceptable -- how can you, a nursing student, even begin to inflict those possibilities on a baby?
