Questions/concerns About Travelling To San Francisco

Questions/concerns About Travelling To San Francisco

Postby Dusan » Fri Feb 07, 2014 10:31 pm

We are thinking of taking a family vacation(myself, wife, son, brother in law & bil's significant other) to San Francisco in the last week of February. Last time I went I was a teenager and my dad drove, so I know there's a lot of traffic, but I've never had to get around there on my own. Most of the places I've travelled as an adult I've taken mass transit(rail & bus), but it seems the further west you go, the less of that there is. My question to anyone who travels there frequently, would you rent a car or would it be easier to get by via rail and bus service? Easier or harder to get by via mass transit than in say Chicago? Some cities(Boston, Chicago, Atlanta, London, etc.) I wouldn't dream of renting a car but if I were an out of towner visiting my present home in the Twin Cities, a car would be the ONLY way to go. What is your experience? Rent a car or rely on mass transit?

Public Transportation here is Good Don?t bother with a car, parking will stress you out.   Check the public transit link below for getting around, it pretty much covers all forms of public transportation here: http://transit.511.org/destinations/index.asp   Have a great time!     Sources: personal knowledge jt3605 74 months ago Please sign in to give a compliment. Questions/concerns About Travelling To San Francisco

Postby Blayr » Tue Feb 11, 2014 1:13 am

I've lived there and vacationed there...public transit is good and fun. Our last trip was a package deal thru Alaska Air that was air fare plus hotel...it was cheaper than just booking air fare. We stayed in a hotel right on Fisherman's Wharf and used a City Pass to travel all over the city on Muni and cable cars. We had a blast and never needed a car. Be sure to go to the Exploratorium and plan to be there most of the day. When I lived there I never had a car, I enjoyed passing the backed up traffic on Muni! See the City Pass that gave us a 7-day pass on Muni and cable cars plus a lot of other features: http://www.citypass.com/city/sanfrancisco.html?id=L7C2dn5M I see there is also something new called a GoCard, see: http://www.gosanfranciscocard.com/?GCID=S18000x009&KEYWORD=san%20francisco%20city%20pass&MATCHTYPE=search There is so much to see and do in SF and a lot in walking distance..if you can handle the hills ;). Coit Tower, Ghiaradelli Square, Fisherman's Wharf, the harbor tour, the sea lions in the harbor, North Beach(old Italian area), China Town, lots of live music every night, Golden Gate bridge...I am getting jealous! I know you'll have fun. Sources: Personal experience OlyPolly 74 months ago Please sign in to give a compliment. Please verify your account to give a compliment. Please sign in to send a message.
