How long is a piece of string? There are some good direction manuals now, but I wish people would read them before they got married. I mean, let's face it, the #1 cause of divorce is marriage! And over 1/3rd of marriages don't work out. Thank god Jennifer Anniston doesn't ever get as far as marrying the guys she is with, or that stat would skyrocket.... But all joking aside, marriage is a commitment to love through thick and thin, not just when you feel like it or it is convenient or makes you feel good. You can bring your dog and cat and even create other participants, little kiddies, but should never lose sight of the spouse being an important part of the marriage, and treated as such, with love and respect. Is it legal, well, the laws in the US have a lot to do with property rights, so while a lot of people get het up about gay marriage, a lot of it has to do with asset protection these days, sharing of assets and so on. Some people believe it is a religious sacrament, while other religions and schools of thought have no recognition of marriage as legally or morally binding-you co-habit. 70% of cultures are actually polygamous. Personally, I find one spouse is more than enough to juggle! Let alone more. But that all has to do with expectations in a marriage, partnership vs romantic love and so on. As for replacing it with a new model, I think we should try. Too many couples get totally het up about the wedding day and forget their vows as soon as the fancy clothes are off or the dust starts to settle on their pile of wedding gifts. Love, honor and cherish, to treat someone with compassion, go a long way towards a successful marriage, as does patience, kindness, and the understanding that no one is perfect, least of all ourselves, and also, and this is a big one, that NO ONE is a mind reader and so if there are 'issues' they need to be dealt with openly. If I say Honey, I've been thinking, my partner immediately gives me his attention. And none of this 'you did this to me" stuff-your feelings are your own and are like clouds passing on a sunny day. they only have power or significance if you let them. It should be, when you did that, I felt XXX=worried, unloved, ignored, whatever. Finally, the best advice I EVER got about marriage= clean out his sock drawer once you are married and fill it with 2 dozen pairs of IDENTICAL black socks, and perhaps a few pairs of white ones if he is a sporty type. that way you will never waste time sorting them, or have to worry about losing one! wildaboutbooks44's Recommendations Everybody Wins: The Chapman Guide to Solving Conflicts without Arguing(Chapman Guides) Amazon List Price: $9.99 Used from: $5.64 Average Customer Rating: 5.0 out of 5(based on 6 reviews) Making Love: The Chapman Guide to Making Sex an Act of Love(Marriage Saver) Amazon List Price: $9.99 Used from: $14.31 Average Customer Rating: 3.0 out of 5(based on 2 reviews) Hope For the Separated: Wounded Marriages Can Be Healed(Chapman, Gary) Amazon List Price: $13.99 Used from: $3.53 Average Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5(based on 22 reviews) The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate Amazon List Price: $14.99 Average Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5(based on 652 reviews) Anger: Handling a Powerful Emotion in a Healthy Way Amazon List Price: $14.99 Used from: $6.79 Average Customer Rating: 4.0 out of 5(based on 15 reviews) The Marriage You've Always Wanted Amazon List Price: $14.99 Used from: $8.66 Average Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5(based on 10 reviews) Now What?: The Chapman Guide to Marriage after Children(Chapman Guides) Amazon List Price: $9.99 Used from: $2.31 Average Customer Rating: 4.0 out of 5(based on 1 reviews) Profit Sharing: The Chapman Guide to Making Money an Asset in Your Marriage(Chapman Guides) Amazon List Price: $9.99 Used from: $4.00 The Heart of the Five Love Languages Amazon List Price: $5.99 Used from: $0.99 Average Customer Rating: 4.0 out of 5(based on 32 reviews) christian based, but very practical wildaboutbooks44 50 months ago Please sign in to give a compliment.
