nations can define marriage how they want, and people define their own relationships We have many restrictions on marriage. You must be over 18 or have parental consent. You cannot be first degree relatives. You must be sane. You cannot have any other legal marriages still in progress. A marriage is a legal contract for a social relationship, granting it extra legal protections that other relationships do not have. As a legal contract, legal restrictions can be placed upon entering it. Restricting marriage to one husband and one wife is not discriminatory. It doesn't prevent homosexuals from entering civil union contracts. It doesn't prevent defacto polyamy with second spouses. It doesn't prevent heterosexual couples living together without marriage. Why should the majority change a law to suit a small minority, when the law does not prevent them from living as they please? The only major advantage is for tax breaks or tax advantages. Imagine if we did open it up. Muslim nations permit polygamy - one husband, multiple wives. This even has the precedence of current law in other nations. But making such a legal change, now we risk child brides, more false marriages to bring immigrants over as third spouses, and Shariah law. We don't have to change our law. Others can choose to live as they choose without our society choosing to change it. TamaraW 41 months ago Please sign in to give a compliment. Please verify your account to give a compliment.
