Settling out of court help?

Postby tai38 » Thu Aug 02, 2012 7:06 am

This is very hypothetical. I am writing something for a school project, and I need it to be as realistic as possible.

My female woman is being sued by an ex boyfriend for defamation of character, and would've been found guilty, because of the evidence, if this went to court. But I want them to settle out of court. If they settle out of court, can my female character simply settle for a restraining order if the male character who is suing her agrees to it? Or is it more complex?

Settling out of court help?

If a case is settled out of court, it can be any agreement.

However, I don't understand what "settle for a restraining order" means. A lawsuit (such as one for defamation) is about money. And a restraining order is an administrative action filed against those accused of violence or credible threats of violence (usually in a domestic situation). The two things are very unrelated.
