Should I become a Deputy US Marshal or a State trooper?

Postby bercnan72 » Fri Jun 01, 2012 10:16 am

I really am looking into law enforcement and I am Stuck between choosing my Career as a marshal or state trooper. I want the Job that has the most action whenever they're "called" to work. Which Job would it be easier to make a living on money wise? Why? And who would be doing more "intense" work like breaking into places or dealing with more "interesting"(as in how they act) criminals?

Salary will depend on the State as far as the trooper goes.

The Marshall service is a much more prestigious group.

If you want to be in very intense police-work, you'll most likely need to join a SWAT team in a major city.

A majority of the US Marshall's work is done in Witness Protection (WITSEC).

The Marshall's have a pretty intense "boot camp" compared to most state/local police training.

Both are Great Career's. If you are accepted into the State Trooper program, there are different steps to take. In our State we have to first do duty as a Capital(of your State) Police Officer or Guard. That time is spent in working at the Capital and study. Then after a year of training, you will be at the beginning of being a State Trooper. US Marshal is a Great Job too, only thing is that you have to have either a Military Retirement background, or Law Enforcement. Many Military Retirment Officers are US Marshal's. Many travel and work for the Airlines, to provide protection to Air Travel. Most often they are Middle aged People. To become a US Marshal you really need a good background. I would be the State Trooper. I don't like to fly.

90% of U.S. Marshals are assigned to guard federal buildings and guard federal judges their entire career, and don't make a single arrest.

State troopers are in the field every day contacting bad guys and arresting people.

It's up to you

Each position will have it's own high risk areas. These 2 jobs are not even a comparison. As a US Marshall, you will mostly work in court houses.
