By journal, I do not imply your blog. I mean a meatspace journal with paper in it. What does your present journal appear like? What sort of things do you use it for? Diary? Inventive writing? Poetry? Spiritual or inspirational journaling? When did you commence journaling and what keeps you doing it?

Some Questions For People Who Keep A Journal.

Postby Clancey » Fri Feb 07, 2014 9:39 am

My current journal is a rugged leather book, six inches by four inches. It's kind of cool, think Indiana Jones's diary. My journal now replaced my PDA which busted after some strenuous activity(I was attempting to parkour, google the videos). I have always kept a journal, even though it was not really a cool thing for a guy to do. But a journal is an intelligent way to keep track of who you are at specific times in your life. It is an opportunity to review your actions and desires and live without regret. It is the shame that you hide in the close, the dog who will always listen, it is your best friend who will recall your actions, it is the beacon of your life. I loved my PDA, it was one of the few ones with a keyboard, had it for years. But there were pros and cons. Keeping a journal on a PDA is great because it's light, convenient, and extremely easy to organize my writing. I could surf the web, listen to music as I wrote, even use it to get out of dark places. Plus my spelling was stellar. My hands didn't hurt after hours of typing on it, either. Why I like the leather journal: The leather is already worn and scuffed but it's still soft and supple in my hands. It's a very organic feel. I love putting my ideas, life events and musings in it. I get a lot of puzzled looks when I write my notes in it. But you always have to change out bindings(when you run out of books) and my thoughts can get lost and disjointed. I was reading my journal the other day and laughing about my adventure at the Social Security Office when I read a reminder that I had to pick up stamps and whole grain pretzels. Of course, the whole adventure kind of got sidetracked due to my messy "post. stamps & whole wheat prets" entry.  Add the fact that I didn't even pick up the stamps or the pretzels, and you have a ruined entry plus two unfulfilled errands. Then a protein shake in my backpack decided to play Mt. St. Helen and erupted all over the journal, making the pages looks like a Playboy magazine in a fraternity house. There's just no win. Ultimately, I think I am going to turn to a smartphone. It's kind of a cop out, I know, but I need to be able to organize my thoughts better in the chaos of my life. Some Questions For People Who Keep A Journal.

Postby Elvyn » Fri Feb 07, 2014 2:01 pm

I kept a journal in junior high and high school, but had not as an adult.  About seven years ago, a childhood friend sent me a blank book after Oprah espoused journaling blessings on her show.  I never saw the show, but I started keeping the book, anyway. The premise, I suppose, is to write five things a day that can be construed as blessings.  The process has been very positive.  As one goes through the day, one starts to watch for a good thing to note, and that encourages a positive attitude.  As someone who passes herself off as "Little Miss Sunshine", I think it is important to "keep your eyes on the prize".  Journaling does that for me.  In a life where finding five good things can be a stretch, at best, it is a step in the right direction. BTW, I consider interacting with the Askvillians, and the wisdom gained worthy of note.

Some Questions For People Who Keep A Journal.

Postby Wadanhyll » Fri Feb 07, 2014 4:24 pm

I go through periods when it seems very important to me to keep a record of my reactions and thoughts about what is going on.  Then I go through other periods when it seems that there either is no need to describe my inner journey to myself, or when there are no words capable of describing it.  It seems when I am going through major interior changes I want to record everything- what I did what I thought about it- what others did and said... it is such a great tool for processing the change, to write about it.  And at those times, often poems emerge, and certainly spiritual and inspirational support appears.  Most of the times when I don't journal, things are fairly peaceful.  However, some of the times when I wasn't writing things were so bad that I could not find words to write without falling apart.  and then as I began to emerge from the dark clouds of life I would begin to write again, eagerly- almost compulsively, and I know things are going to change.  Writing in a journal is very comforting to me- generally I find one of those pretty blank books at a bookstore to journal in- but I have used just regular notebooks as well.  Sometimes when I don't have one yet that hasn't been filled, I will use just blank paper and then fold it in the front of the new journal when I buy it. lol- whatever works!   I have in the back of my mind that someday I will go through them all and find the gems- write those up for my children and burn the rest.  Who knows?  There may not be any!(grins)
