The former Attorney General of Texas from 1983 to 1990, known as "The People's Lawyer," died in his sleep Thursday morning, November 20, at the age of 65. Considered one of Texas's best attorneys general, he was know for the modernization of the Texas AG's office, for expanding consumer protection, and successfully undertaking child support collections for the state. Who was he?

I had the honor of working for the Attorney General's office in the mid-1980s, as Jim Mattox was building the Child Support Enforcement Division. Mattox stated that failure to support a child is a form of child abuse. He put muscle behind the previously empty threats against deadbeat parents. Our actions improved the lives of tens of thousands of families in Texas and, because of reciprocal interstate agreements, across the nation.

We lost a great AG when he left office.

The current AG in Texas is in a wheelchair following a freak accident years ago. The irony is that, after he received substantial compensation for his own injuries, he supported the successful efforts in Texas to place legal limits on compensation available in lawsuits for such damages. Jim would never have done that.
