Let me first state that I am Canadian and not from the US where illegal/undocumented immigration is a major concern.
My opinion is based solely on my views as an outsider so I am curious about the opinion of others.
As for mine: persons who cross a soverign nation's border without abiding that nation's immigration laws are committing a criminal act and thus are illegal immigrants. The reasons behind this i.e. looking for better life etc cannot detract from the fact that a law has been violated.
I have professors who say that calling them illegal is wrong. That they should be referred to as "undocumented". But undocumented somehow suggests that their immigration paperwork is just delayed and in the mail. They dont have their documents because they didnt go through the legal process. There is a difference so why candy-coat it?
This doesnt mean that I dont acknwoledge the huge gap between rights and quality of life etc in different nations and that reforms should be done to assist people to legally move to more prosperous nations. But this is all besides the point. If you want law reform, you go through the proper democratic channels. You dont support criminal acts in the hundreds of thousands which in turn burden the social systems and structure of the country.
That is my view as a non-American. If you think that its right or wrong etc, please share.
Im very curious about the views of others.
Thanks
