When we go to the hospital, we expect to be safe!

Postby fyfe » Sat Nov 19, 2011 9:52 am

Did you read about the woman at West Palm Beach hospital given the wrong meds? She was 17 weeks pregnant. The medicaton caused her to induce labor and she gave birth to two still born babies! Shocking! And in the same day, the hospital gave the wrong medication to another woman causing her baby to be born with brain damage! Oh my! Sounds like some people need to be fired! How horrible! Read it here. http://www.wpbf.com/cnn-news/17513851/detail.html

It sounds like someone in the hospital gave the wrong medications deliberately. This is more serious than a simple error or someone misreading the labels. For that, all they need to do is put on their glasses. But remember that Actor Dennis Quaid and his twins almost dying because of a medical mishap? Coincidence maybe, but when two others, not three others babies are killed or permanently damaged, this is a deliberate attack. Maybe someone is following Darwin's law of survival of the fitness and is deciding that those not fit to survive should not. The hospital should get the police to launch a criminal investigation and find out if there is a connection and take appropriate action.

hi estherlou hi again I always ask what each med is for when I am in the hospital as i take a lot of meds for existing long term medical problems. I want to know that I am getting the meds that mydoctor prescribed for me and not something that is wrong. the nurses have always been most receptive to my questions and most helpful too. I had to have insulin for my meals as hospitals do not give oral diabetes drugs. so told them to be careful as I was not used to insulin so usually did not need much. It is deplorable when they make errors and could be prevented by some asking on the part of each patient. the same kind of care that is e xericised to be sure you get the right blood when they give you a transfusion. two nurses check and recheck each container of blood before the transfusion is ever started so they know you are getting the right type of blood. an error here could kill a patient almost immediately. I had to have four of them so was glad that they are so careful.

Oh God, this is very sad indeed. This is the reason I do not trust the doctors. Most of the people think that doctors are God. But no its not true. I ahve had many bad experiences with the doctors and so I simply do not trust them anymore. Even if she sues the hospital, she will not get her baby back. Its really sad. Pregnancy itself is such a difficult time. Women have to face so many troubles starting with morning sickness and other health priorities. But a women does all this just to see the smiling face of her healthy baby. I can understand what the lady must be going through. May God give her strength and may the doctors and the nurses be punished for their mistake. This is such a profession, where mistakes cannot be afforded.

Hello estherlou. I feel so bad to hear this. I agree that unqualified doctors and nurses should be fired due to their careless work.

That is so horrible!! I do suspect more of this goes on that does not get caught. Alot of things would not be so drastic.

There are so many types of medicines and different vials with different or similar print that it is frequently a problem making sure the right dosage or the right drug is given is hard. Add to that the doctors handwriting and you have a recipe for disaster. Many hospitals have changed to computer bar coding systems that are supposed to be better. But we still have a long way to go to protect the patients.
