Which Law firm should I choose?

Postby hjortur » Sat Apr 02, 2011 4:05 am

I am doing some volunteer work for an attorney that does mainly collections and bankruptcy. I received a better opportunity from a firm that is closer to my home and is a general practice firm. I am supposed to start at this new law firm tomorrow. I informed the other attorney today that I had another opportunity and I was going to take it. Now he is offering me a paid position that is a 3 month probation period for $13hr then $16 after 3mo if it all works out. I really want to take the money but I think I'd get more experience at this other place however they will not be paying me and I may never get a paid position at this prestigious firm but I will be getting experience in what I'd like to do and I will certainly have something great to put on a resume in the future. I really want to do the internship at the firm that will not be paying me but the money is so appealing. I think in the long run it will pay off if I go with the better firm that practices the area of law I am most interested in. I really need money though. What would you do?

Granted general practice will expose you to such more experience in other areas such as family, civil, criminal and bankruptcy law. But with no money, how long can you go w/out it?

Could you intern 1 day a week, say Saturday to get some experience? That way you could work at this present job and get paid, plus get some inside knowledge of how a general practice works. A lot of big law firms are open 6 days a week, and this way if you look for a better job say in 6 months to a year, you could list your present job in bankruptcy plus your internship at the general practice, which might make you more appealing as a candidate.

good luck

Home working is always a bit tricky because there are so many rogues who are out to scam you. I have been working from home in recent times, I discovered some great instruction on the website in the box below which showed me the greatest method to go about it.
