Why are most Americans so ignorant?

Postby weiford » Mon Jul 16, 2012 10:40 am

To quote a line from "Men in Black" a person is smart, but people are stupid.

My question does revolve around the upcoming election, however of goes back much further.

Let me start with a disclaimer. The following will seem very anti Obama, but that is because he is at the current center of our current mess. I am aware that the Bush family is responsible for the initiation of most of what I will be posing.

I have never been a supporter of Obama. I am usually pretty good at cutting through the BS and seeing what is really at the heart of the matter. That is what bring me to pose my question. Why are most Americans so ignorant? Please do not confuse ignorant.which is not having knowledge vs stupid which is being content with not having knowledge and either forming an opinion or following someone else's opinion that is not based on fact. I guarantee some of the latter will reply to this post.

I believe in the constitution and I have read it in its entirety. When I talk with people, most have no clue as to their rights and privilages. Most think that the constitution give is our rights when it actually protects them. Most people believe the president has the authority to make laws. Most people have a sound byte education for current events.

I am aware that all politicians lie. However, I cannot actually come up with one campaign promise that was accomplished in Obama's first term. Before the stupidest start claiming Obamacare, read it first. It is not a fix, it is a bandaid on a hairy situation. When it comes time to remove Tue bandwidth it will hurt like hell. I cannot even grant him his broad promise of change as we went from one tyrant to another.

We have not had a decent candidate in decades. I understand we are a republic not a democracy, but why to the majority of the people put such lousy choices out there for us. Why are people like myself that praises the constitution that this country was founded on considered extremists or conspiracy theorists when our statements are backed with facts?

I regress. My question is, why do the American people refuse to research the facts and educate themselves in current events so that they are able to be well informed when they cast their votes?

If you want my vote history...
First vote was for Perot
Second vote was Clinton
Third vote was for Bush
Fourth Vote was against bush, Kerry
Fifth vote was against Obama, McCain
Upcoming vote will be for Ron Paul

Please note that at the time of the votes I supported the For votes and did not support any of the candidates for the Against votes.

People say and believe in whatever they see on the news.

Note: Ron Paul won't be on election ballots so you might want to change your mind.

This holier-than-thou insulting attitude is why Ron Paul is not liked by anyone but his rude supporters.

I don't think it's ignorance as much as it is having to sort through a lot of verbiage in an effort to get some little kernal of truth out of what is being conveyed by others, only to find in the end there was really nothing worth seeking in the first place. Take your question, for example ....

You know, I had wondered that myself and found this interesting article on the history of anti-intellectualism in the history of the US. It's usually the conservatives that believe this, and it's based on a tradition of exploitation and control grounded in religion, commerce, etc. You can read it here.
