It is a little late to change things now, but at the time of our revolution, the Whigs (precursors of the Republicans) wanted George Washington to become our first King. Only 15% of the people could vote in our first elections, as they were restricted to White Anglo-Saxon Protestant males over 21 who owned land and paid property taxes.

Anyway, many Democracies have been tyrannical (consider the reign of Terror after the French Revolution). And many Monarchs have been quite beneficent (consider Qatar). Democracy does not guarantee freedom, just the freedom to vote the tyrant out at the end of his term (and we know how well that works in many countries).
