My son was born with brain damage because of my wife's OBGYN's inaction.
My wife went to the doctor on a Thursday when she was 38 weeks along (almost full term), and told the doctor that she hadn't felt the baby move in over a day. The doctor checked the heart beat, heard one and told her that it was nothing and not to worry. She went home, and didn't feel a movement for another entire day. We called the emergency after hours number for her doctor's office, and were told to go to the hospital. They put her on a fetal movement monitor and saw that the baby was not moving. She had an emergency c-section on the spot. When they took the baby out, he was almost dead. He was grey - like old meat, and wasn't moving or crying. After working on him for a while they got him breathing. He spent 2 weeks in Intensive Care before he got sent home. All of the doctors in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit said that my wife saved his life by coming in when she did, and they told us that putting him on a fetal movement monitor would have been standard care. Her doctor's inaction caused an additional day of distress to my son, and indoubtedly made his condition worse.
He's 4 years old now, and is very smart, but has a lot of trouble walking. Considering how much worse it would have been had we listened to the doctors, we feel blessed.
