Am I Eligable For Short Term Disability?

Postby darvell » Fri Dec 23, 2011 12:30 am

i've been looking around for days, but all i can find is information about car accidents and work related injuries. because we live in the greatest country in the world, maybe some of you would have some answers =)

i'm 19 years only, currently unemployed, and have quite the problem. I have 2 bulging disks in my lower back, 1 of them is pressing against my spinal cord, and the other is pinching a nerve; causing muscle loss, and loss of movement in my right leg. i did not injure myself at work, i was not in a car accident, it just happened. i was specifically told not to work, as i could become paralyzed. i can't sit for more than 2 hours at a time, and i can't do any more physical activites. IE: ref hockey, golf, swim, etc.
so, i was wondering if i am eligable (with the information given, i can provide more if you ask) for a short term disability until i get my surgery, which at the earliest will be 6 months.

Am I Eligable For Short Term Disability?

You would not be eligible for SSI or Social Security disability benefits unless you will be unable to work for at least one full year. Is it possible that you would meet this requirement? You don't say how long you have already been off work. If, at any time, it appears that your condition will prevent you from working for at least a year, file for benefits with the Social Security Administration.

Otherwise there are no short term disability benefits payable to you.

in the US.some states do have mandatory short term disability benefits--deductions are taken from paychecks.....not to mention intelligent people have STD insurance
