I heard Tony Perkins say that legalizing gay marriage violates his First Amendment rate to practice his religion. That seemed a little odd. Perhaps it would if there was some law mandating whatever goofball church he goes to marry homosexuals on their property, but I’m confused as to how the legal recognition of marriage between same sex couple inhibits his ability to practice his religion.
For example, if your religion mandates that Sunday is to be a day of rest, you can rest, and you can even sue your employer should they force you to work on Sunday or fire for refusing to do so. You cannot, however, make it illegal for anyone to work on Sunday because that is a mandate of your religion.
Please explain. I’m confused.
