Does the landlord have to fix my frequent blackouts?

Postby rheged » Sat Jul 28, 2012 2:06 pm

I currently live in a 12 apartment building in New Jersey. Apparently, my apartment is the only apartment that "blacks out" if i'm using "too much power." I told the landlord that this is a horrible inconvenience and is starting to effect my work -- I would like it fixed. The landlord just replies that i'm using "too much power." I have checked with the other tenets and it turns out I do not have anything extra that they don't have and use. Including three AC window units!

So, am I crazy to ask my landlord to fix these personal rolling blackouts? I'm no energy hog and I would really like these frequent disturbances to stop. Is there something in state/city law that requires the property owner to fix this electrical problem? Building code, safety regulations, anything?

Thanks in advance!

Could possibly be a weak breaker.....But you would need to prove this to the landlord....But without someone with an amprobe that knows how to use it you probably won't get anything done...Good luck

It is entirely possible that you are using too much power. Just because you have the same stuff as your neighbors doesn't prove anything. You may be using it differently. Or your stuff may be bigger. For instance, are your window AC units the same size as your neighbors? Are they all running on high, all the time?

Not trying to scare you but, stop using all 3 a/c's at once. You also need a qualified electrician out there but I doubt your landlord will pay for that.
