Got my law degree... then what?

Postby choviohoya » Tue Jul 03, 2012 11:16 am

I have just completed my LLB Hons degree and if that helps.. i only got a 3rd Honours Degree which i know, it isn't very good. I am not sure if being a lawyer is what i wanna be so I am thinking if going through the bar course in my country is what i should do. Should I try working in a legal firm before jumping into the course or.. i have been thinking to take up master in business or some other course like diploma in legal secretary/paralegal or go for the corporate counsel program..

I find that i have got no burning desire to do anything so it's a really difficult time for me. I look up the job prospect in being a lawyer and have seen many saying that the law field is drying up and so on. Jobs like legal clerk or paralegal doesn't sound as promising too. Well i know i have to get real and stop dreaming that i will get into a promising career right after i finish my degree. I have also got no working experience at all so i doubt if i ever going to get a job since the economy right now is so bad.

Any advice?

Glad to meet you.
At first .i think we need to know what do you want to do ?
(No one can do a excellent job which he does not like .)
Then you need to know which advantage you have ?So you can make sure the job you want whether suitable for you.
And what life do you want to get ?A normal and steady life or life with challenges and risk?

You need a life plan now ...
Hope you will like my answer

Realistically, you have almost no chance of getting a training contract with a firm of solicitors or a pupilship with a barristers chambers if you have only a 3rd class degree. So that decision has probably been made for you. There is cut-throat competition for trainee places and they can afford to be very picky. Also don't do an MBA straight off, loads of people do that as a way of avoiding signing on and without corporate experience it's meaningless. In fact don't rush into anything at this stage, take time to find out what you enjoy.
If you learned to touch type, which is not as hard as people claim, you could quickly become an unusually well qualified legal secretary. They earn fairly decent money and good ones are always in demand, and then you have the flexibility of temping to fit round your longer term plans. I think you should talk to some legal secretary agencies and ask what sort of training you'd need before you could work for them. Then temp a while and see the world and decide whether you want to go into the corporate world in some capacity. If you decide you hate the corporate world then you can use your legal sec skills to support yourself while you train for something completely different.
