Is dvd copying illegal?

I found a dvd copying program online for free and I'm wondering if the software is illegal or not? is it illegal to copy a rented dvd? and if so, what laws state these rules?

If you copy it for your own use and don't try to sell it, who's to know.

Software itself is not illegal. It's merely a tool.

You're not supposed to copy a rented DVD, as it's prohibited by your rental agreement. (it's in the fine print)

It is very illegal to copy rented movies or to download them off the internet. There is a large fine associated with piracy. The only time you can legally copy movies or music is if you purchased it. Them you can make a backup copy but only one.you are not allowed to resell them.

If you copy the dvd you already own for your further personal dvd movie enjoyment. It is ok.
