Large Blood Clot in Mouth after all four Wisdom Teeth were removed.?

Postby adusa37 » Mon Dec 12, 2011 8:02 am

I am posting this question for my Mother who had all four of her wisdom teeth pulled out last Friday. None of them had actually came through yet, and all were impacted and two infected. Needless to say they were cut out if that makes a difference to the problem.

The swelling in her cheeks were horrible after surgery, but most times it would be... however the swelling increased greatly, and by Sunday evening her one cheek was swollen to the size of a grape. She went back in to the dentist on Monday, he confirmed that she had a blood clot in her cheek? He claimed this was relatively normal and nothing to be overly concerned about, that it would go away. By yesterday afternoon the "blood clot" was the size of a baseball, and she is in TERRIBLE pain. My dad took her to emergency, and they told her that they couldn't do much for her, except to give her pain medicine, and to make an appt. to go back and see her dentist asap. She has an appointment tomorrow morning with her dentist, however I am weary of him and his staff. So is my family at this point. I have googled a million times, and can't find this "common problem" related to teeth pulled anywhere.

We have taken pictures of the blood clot and all of its stages, it is also infected now at this point as well. Should we be worried of malpractice? Has anyone heard of such a thing? And info would be extremely helpful... I feel as if something is obviously very wrong here.

Thank you kindly for your time,

RW

Hi
Sorry to hear about your Mum, it is very painful having wisdom teeth out, the dentist staff should have applied an ice pack immediately after the extractions as this reduces the swelling, It is difficult to tell with out seeing your Mum what the problem is, I can only suggest that she starts rinsing with warm salty water, this will feel healing and help with bacteria tell your Mum to rest and takes some pain relief.

Large Blood Clot in Mouth after all four Wisdom Teeth were removed.?

I am a registered Dental Hygienist. I had no problems with my 3rd molar extractions but I was a teenager. Speaking from DENTAL experience (not personal, tooth-pain experience) I would say that the "blood clot" is normal and actually something you WANT after an extraction. The extreme swelling is abnormal and severe pain is, of course, not something anyone wants to have.

A clot forms at the top of the extraction site in order to facilitate healing of the area. If the clot is dislodged then food/bacteria can weasel their way into the hole and cause an infection. This is where I have seen swelling, pain and antibiotics come into play. Dry socket is horrible.

Maybe if there is fluid build up they can drain the area, but if there is no infection present then she just reacted to the surgery with EXTREME swelling. If two teeth had abscesses (you mentioned infection in the initial description) then maybe the presence of these bacteria-baddies in the first place helped to create a problem AFTER the extraction.

I can not help with CURING this situation, but I just thought I'd throw some info at you.
Good luck to you and your mom.
