My boss won't let me leave to go to my wife when she's in labor?

I started a new job recently and it's a pretty good job. It has some good opportunity advancement and pretty good pay. I'm a heavy equipment operator. Well, I introduced my wife to my boss the day I got hired to show she's pregnant. She's 36 weeks pregnant. My first day of work I told him "if my wife or someone calls, please come and get me, she is expected to go into labor any day now". He said "I can't promise you anything". And they seem to be against me leaving the work site to see the birth of our FIRST child. Now, some of you may not have kids, but this is the most important day of ANYBODYS life. The moment my son breathes his first breath of air I want to be there. That will be the best moment of my life and my wife's life and I DON'T want to miss a second of it. Is there a law against employers not letting you leave because of this or something? What would you do?

Ask him how HE would feel if he couldnt see the birth of his first child.. or just pretend you're sick

I would announce that you had a 'family medical emergency' that you need to attend to. For some odd reason, employers are OK with letting you leave for that but not for a baby. Do you have a cell or radio that you can be reached at on site? or let your wife know that when she calls sound urgent and state there is a family emergency and he needs to come home ASAP.

When u got hired u should of got a handbook stated the jobs policies. Check the maternity/paternity leave. If you have vacation or sick leave u could use that. But for sure check the policies. I would also look up ur legal rights in the state u live in. If i had known ur state i would have checked for u. Also check on a policy called FMLA, its the family medical leave act. If ur the only one able to care for ur wife and child then they have to give u the time off, and they cant fire u. But like i said check it out for ur state.

I am pretty sure there is a law that protects men like a male maternity leave i would look into ut.... i dont think they can fire you if you get tgat call and leave.... thats just so wrong pretty sure you have a right to take a certain amount of time off too after baby is born good luck and congrats
