News of Labor Laws

I went out of work on disability for brain surgery on 10/9/06. On 1/9/07 my employer showed up at my home and told me that she had to "fill my position" and that they would hold my health insurance until the end of that month. Can they legally let me go and end my insurance while the doctor still has me "totally incapacitated"?

I am aware of the vague language in the policy about the employee OR employer can terminate employment at any time without advanced notice or with any explanation.

There are so many labor laws and human resource laws in California that I'm suspicious that this is not all forthcoming. Is it really that simple? Can I really terminate my employment without an explanation and have no issues? (Leaving out that I am not looking for ...

I work at a restaurant....

and the temperature can get extremely hot in the kitchen area...and there's hardly (basically NO) air conditioning whatsoever...easily reaching temperatures of 85-90 degrees.

We've had 2 girls pass out in the past month because of the heat.

Are there any laws regarding the temperature it must be in the workplace or is that one of those things that doesn't really matter?

My store merged with another one and they managers with the least amount time at the company got the shaft.
