OSHA regulations on employees riding in bed of truck?

Postby maddox » Tue May 08, 2012 3:31 am

Just curious to know about the OSHA regulations on this issue. I seem to find conflicting reports about it.

An article I read said it was okay but as long as it's not on the tailgate, another article I read said OSHA fined a landscaping company for doing it after employee fell off and died, and I saw a safety document that outlined the policies outlining how to properly sit in the back of a truck to comply with regulations (not on the sides or on the tailgate, but okay if inside the bed) but I think it was dated from 2002.

I personally can't find anything on the OSHA website (not very user friendly, in my opinion) to clarify the issue.

Can employees ride in the bed of a moving pick up truck? I mean literally, butts on the bed of the truck. It's not illegal in our state's vehicle laws but I'm curious how OSHA deals with transporting a dozen employees across a 120 acre property.

If somebody would point out what the exact section/subsection codes are so I can look it up would be great, too.
