Where Does Medical Pot Originate From?

Higher Situations in Mississippi  The federally funded Weed Task at Ole Miss develops countless pounds of box? and it is all fully legal. by Bianca Phillips     Concealed inside a safely supervised, nondescript lab to the University of Mississippi campus in Oxford lies a potheadis want grow to be a reality. Heavy-duty cardboard containers and drums kept in a larger-stability fridge shop pounds and pounds of marijuana buds. Inside the identical fridge, countless folded bones are saved in containers. Inside the climate-controlled space nearby, shiny-green pot crops remain five-feet tall, as even though ready for a Larger Scenarios shut-up. Away from Coy Watts. Waller Lab Complicated, a clear area awaits clippings from these interior crops, where at some point later on, a backyard marijuana garden can thrive underneath the watchful eye of the National Center for Natural Merchandise Researchis Marijuana Task. But this "dank" will not be accessible for your pipes and bongs of Cheech & Chong followers. The pot developed listed right here is utilized purely for government-authorized research applications. Actually, the Marijuana Task at Ole Miss may be the only service in the united states officially permitted to develop marijuana for investigation. In its final increasing season, in 2007, the college produced 400 lbs? around 880 lbs? for the National Institute on Drug-Abuse(NIDA). Along with developing pot for study, the Marijuana Job examines examples of seized marijuana from all about the nation. In mid-Might, Ole Miss released a study declaring that illicitly created pot involves a standard ten.1 percentage of its active element, tetrahydrocannabinol(THC). In contrast to THC degrees of 4 % in the first '80s and around 1 percent in the 1970s, right now 's road marijuana is a lot more potent than ever. Growing Government Pot In the little darkroom, some grow-lights are centered on a couple of fully mature marijuana plants, providing flowering buds and ranking more than the best of Dr. Mahmoud ElSohly, manager of the college's pot-expanding organizations. The doctor gently smells his hands and rubs amongst the sprouts. "The smell is extremely powerful," says the mild-mannered representative in large Egyptian accent.(Really, utilizing the wide range of weed kept onsite, the entire Waller Complicated has got the skunk-like smell of the stoner's cellar.) Countless additional interior plants inside the grow space are kept living in a hanging state, meaning as a means to safeguard clippings for your outside yard, they're prohibited to develop or marijuana. This season, NIDA has yet to get a sizable-size outside "develop," nevertheless when they do, the starter material will be supplied by cuttings from the indoor plants. The Marijuana Taskis government agreement from NIDA enables the college to create marijuana to be allocated for study in the united states. Pot is allocated to scientists after they've been by means of the appropriate channels with the Meals and Drug Administration and the Drug Enforcement Agency(DEA). For instance, the National Eye Institute has acquired marijuana from Ole Miss to evaluation the outcomes of cannabinoids(the chemical components in marijuana) on intraocular pressure. "With pot being [a Schedule I substance], it is just open to researchers via the us government. Theyare the only real organization that could deliver marijuana, and they've ownership of all of the marijuana thatis [officially] designed," ElSohly claims. "We're operating being an arm of the [U.S.] government." The Marijuana Task began in 1968, just a couple decades soon after THC was found to function as the active element in marijuana. The us government was looking for common substance to analyze, which advisable that pot will have to be developed beneath carefully controlled circumstances to handle the quantity of THC and other cannabinoids in the completed item. The us government released a request for proposals, and Ole Miss was chosen for a 3-year agreement. The agreement is renewed each and every five years, and the college ought to submit a brand new bet everytime. "If one more business arrived along side equivalent abilities that could do this for only a tiny much less income, we could drop this," ElSohly claims. "We've no concept who applies every single time and on occasion even if other men and women applies at all." But simply because the Pot Activity hasbeen located at Ole Miss for more than 40 years, it usually does not appear most likely they will drop the agreement anytime quickly. ElSohly hasbeen with the project since 1975, when he changed from understanding poison ivy to exploring pot underneath the projectis former representative, Carlton Turner. When Turner quit to function as President Ronald Reagan's drug czar in 1980, ElSohly was offered to manage the evaluation of seized marijuana, study, and developing process.   more for this account at...

It is called "weed" for a good explanation: it grows like 1. And as long as a single is not greedy, and as long as one particular is careful, and as extended as 1 is only concerned with supplying oneself and no one else ever knows about it, obtaining a potted pot plant or two is pretty straightforward. The "Medical Marijuana" comes from donations by such folk.

Where Does Medical Marijuana Come From?

Postby Quincey » Sun Feb 09, 2014 1:48 pm

In California it is legal, under state law to grow medical marijuana. There is a limit to the number of plants per person, but co-opts of several growers together can produce a lot of pot. And of course there are illegal growers who supply it. The clinics vary in their interest in where the pot comes from, from enforcing rules and quality standards, to...well, anything goes. The City of Oakland actually had city run shops, that not only sold pot and hash, but had their own grow operations; they gave classes in how to grow your own, make your own hash, cook with pot, etc. A crack down by the Feds, and some high profile busts caused the City to close the official shops, but there are plenty of independents still operating. Now that Obama has officially made pot offenses low priority, the City run shops might make a come back, but there is no shortage of herbage.

Where Does Medical Marijuana Come From?

Postby Faodhagan » Thu Feb 13, 2014 2:56 pm

The federally funded Marijuana Project at Ole Miss grows hundreds of pounds of pot ? and it's all perfectly legal. High Times in Mississippi  The federally funded Marijuana Project at Ole Miss grows hundreds of pounds of pot ? and it's all perfectly legal. by Bianca Phillips     Hidden within a securely monitored, nondescript laboratory on the University of Mississippi campus in Oxford lies a pothead's dream come true. Heavy-duty cardboard barrels and boxes stored in a high-security freezer hold pounds and pounds of marijuana buds. In the same freezer, hundreds of rolled joints are stored in cans. In the climate-controlled room next door, bright-green marijuana plants stand five feet tall, as if ready for a High Times close-up. Outside the Coy W. Waller Laboratory Complex, an empty field awaits cuttings from those indoor plants, where at some time in the future, an outdoor marijuana garden will flourish under the watchful eye of the National Center for Natural Products Research's Marijuana Project. But this "dank" won't be available for the bongs and pipes of Cheech & Chong fans. The marijuana grown here is used strictly for government-approved research purposes. In fact, the Marijuana Project at Ole Miss is the only facility in the country legally allowed to grow marijuana for research. In its last growing season, in 2007, the university produced 400 kilos ? around 880 pounds ? for the National Institute on Drug Abuse(NIDA). In addition to growing pot for research, the Marijuana Project analyzes samples of seized marijuana from all over the country. In mid-May, Ole Miss released a report stating that illicitly produced marijuana contains an average 10.1 percent of its active ingredient, tetrahydrocannabinol(THC). Compared with THC levels of around 1 percent in the 1970s and 4 percent in the early '80s, today's street marijuana is more potent than ever. Growing Government Pot Inside a small darkroom, a set of grow lights are focused on a pair of fully mature marijuana plants, boasting flowering buds and standing well over the head of Dr. Mahmoud ElSohly, director of the university's pot-growing operations. The doctor gently rubs one of the buds and smells his fingers. "The smell is very strong," says the mild-mannered director in a heavy Egyptian accent.(In fact, with the large amount of marijuana stored onsite, the entire Waller Complex has the skunk-like smell of a stoner's basement.) Hundreds of other indoor plants in the grow room are kept alive in a suspended state, meaning they're not allowed to grow or bud, as a way to preserve cuttings for the outdoor garden. This year, NIDA has yet to request a large-scale outdoor "grow," but when they do, cuttings from the indoor plants will provide the starter material. The Marijuana Project's government contract from NIDA allows the school to grow marijuana to be distributed for research across the country. Marijuana is distributed to researchers after they've gone through the proper channels with the Food and Drug Administration and the Drug Enforcement Agency(DEA). For example, the National Eye Institute has procured marijuana from Ole Miss to study the effects of cannabinoids(the chemical components in marijuana) on intraocular pressure. "With marijuana being [a Schedule I drug], it's only available to investigators through the federal government. They're the only entity that can distribute marijuana, and they have possession of all the marijuana that's [legally] produced," ElSohly says. "We are acting as an arm of the [U.S.] government." The Marijuana Project began in 1968, just a few years after THC was discovered to be the active ingredient in marijuana. The federal government was looking for standardized material to research, which meant that marijuana would need to be grown under carefully controlled conditions to regulate the amount of THC and other cannabinoids in the finished product. The federal government issued a request for proposals, and Ole Miss was chosen for a three-year contract. The contract is renewed every five years, and the university must submit a new bid each time. "If another organization came along with equal capabilities that could do this for a little less money, we could lose this," ElSohly says. "We have no idea who applies each time or even if anyone else applies at all." But since the Marijuana Project has been housed at Ole Miss for more than 40 years, it doesn't seem likely they'll lose the contract anytime soon. ElSohly has been with the project since 1975, when he switched from studying poison ivy to researching marijuana under the project's former director, Carlton Turner. When Turner left to serve as President Ronald Reagan's drug czar in 1980, ElSohly was promoted to oversee the growing operation, research, and analysis of seized marijuana.   more to this story at ... Thanks Maggo, I knew it was legal, just didn't know who was doing the growing. My friend says the prices are very low for what you are getting. He is an old pothead. His doctor just gave him a perscription even though he isn't sick. He just retired and is having a good ole time. LOL!
