Why are police allowed to use social networking sites to catch 'criminals'?

Postby ring » Sun Dec 18, 2011 1:28 am

Why must law enforcement be so powerful? Why can't we further limit their rights like they are limiting ours? Why can't there be a system of checks and balances where police must actually see it happening in front of them for it to count as 'in plain site?' Photo shop exists. Something may not be what it seems in a picture. And whatever happened to freedom of speech? You say something about a politician or president, sounding your metaphorically violent opinions, that do not actually mean you are going to do something against that official, and you still get arrested. Who is some weak human lord to own me? I say you do not own me.

While agreeing with the 2 answers above me, I had to add freedom of speech ends when you threaten or endanger another rights or person.

What exactly are you ranting about? About the only thing I know of that social network sites are used for in law enforcement is if someone posts something about them bringing guns to school and shooting the place up. And even then, it's not enough to arrest and charge anyone for, but it is enough to investigate and bring the person in for questioning.

If you have any cases where something on a social networking site was the ONLY evidence of a crime, and that person was arrested, charged, and convicted, please provide it.

Public domains are just that; public. It would be the same as placing an ad in the paper with your *intent* to commit a crime. This isn't as much my concern as the patriot act which allows law enforcement to illegal search and seizure under the constitution without a warrant or probable cause. That's an overreach of power that needs to be stopped.

It's the level of stupidity exception. If someone is stupid enough to post proof of their illegal actions on to the internet, then they are too stupid to live amongst us and must be jailed and / or fined.

What's wrong, bro?

Upset that you can't post pics of you getting high on Facebook without fear of the Police catching on (and confirming to everyone else that you are the jack a-s they knew you to be)?

I also can't believe you are stupid enough to believe that the police will use a single photo to arrest you... instead of use it as part of an investigation.

As to "Freedom of Speech"... nothing in the COTUS frees you from consequences of your speech. You have the right to say what you want... but not the right to be free from it's consequences.

I say you are some kid upset because you posted something dumb on the internet and got in trouble for it.

tl;dr: cry more, you little baby.
