California Traffic Regulations: Can A Motorcycle Officially Cross A Double Solid Yellow Line In To The Car-Pool Lane In California?

Postby engelbert96 » Sun Jan 05, 2014 11:20 pm

This is exactly what I noticed. Our car was in the carpool lane(stone lane) on a California highway. The carpool lane includes a double solid yellow line amongst it and regular targeted traffic. You will uncover normal breaks in the double yellow line where it becomes just one particular vibrant splash line. The motorcycle crossed the double line proper ahead of us, and then crossed it again to hold the lane.I understand it's legal for just one person on the motorcycle to remain a carpool lane, but is it legal for them to cross a strong double yellow line to have in it?

California Traffic Laws: Can A Motorcycle Legally Cross A Double Solid Yellow Line Into The Car Pool Lane In California?

Motorcyclists must obey all traffic laws. The only thing they can legally do that automobiles and trucks cannot is drive in-between lanes of traffic on the highway(at least this is true in California -- not sure about other states). If it were up to me, I'd make this most-dangerous practice illegal -- but as of now it is perfectly legal. They cannot, however, cross a double-yellow line. They'd get a ticket for that if caught.

Then, it was explained to me that the carpool lane is to encourage full capacity in cars, or at least have two people instead of one. If one person is on a motorcycle, then it is at half capacity or on small cycles full capacity. A car usually has seats for 4 or 5. A motorcycle is maxed out at 2(unless there is a type of motorcycle I know nothing about.) 75 months ago

no. This law applies the same to motorcycles. This is illegal.  Motorcycles are allowed in the car pool lane if they are in a group.  The thinking behind this is that they are using less space on the freeway. The reason the lines were created was to ensure that on that particular stretch there would not be any lane changes due to a particular road conditions or something the CHP felt was an unstable stretch of highway. You have enlightened me however on the fact that motorcyclists can be in the carpool lane. I didn't know that and I work in the auto insurance business and did some DMV work as well. That $500 fine is a real scene stealer. 75 months ago

no you said it...  it is legal for motorcyclists to be on their bikes alone in the carpool lane, but the key here is the double solid yellow.  by law, no one is to cross teh double yellow.  hd he crossed over when it was the dashes, it would have been completely legal, but since he crossed the double yellow(twice in fact), it was not.   this is one of those traffic laws that unfortunately many people do not adhere to much like speeding.
