Ticket for crossing double yellow line price too high?

Postby jabin20 » Sun Dec 18, 2011 5:27 pm

This is in california los angeles county

I had a ticket for open container and crossing yellow line and it said misdemeanor
I did not recieve a ticket in the mail for how much I have to pay nor I can find the ticket through the lasuperior court system. I then went to court on my court date and saw my name in the list. I saw the judge and it was an infraction because I was 21 and over. They dropped the open container and I was left with crossing the yellow line. The fee came up to 490 dollars with traffic school. If it was infraction why didn't I recieve my ticket in the mail in the first place, and second how is the fine for crossing double yellow line so high? I assume it is 60-70 dollars for traffic school, how about 420 for crossing double yellow line? they said 85+ penalty assesments. I don't think for a first time violation my fee is supposed to be that high for a crossing double lines on a city street.

What do you think would be an appropriate fine for drinking and driving, and pulling a bone-head move that could result in a head on?

The reason you did not get a courtesy notice is because the open container charge was cited as a misdemeanor. Courtesy notices are used only when you can take care of the citation through the mail or on line. A court appearance is mandatory on a misdemeanor so no courtesy notice is sent, even if a prosecutor later decides to prosecute the matter as an infraction.

The scheduled fine for an illegal turn or lane change is about $235, including all assessments, but you did not get a citation for that alone. You entered into a plea bargain where they dropped the open container charge, and you were then able to avoid the DMV point for crossing the yellow line with traffic school. This was a VERY good deal, since you could not have avoided the open container charge with traffic school and that could have had a major effect on your insurance costs.

But, when you get something, you have to give something. In this case, instead of the scheduled fine for the infraction you were given the maximum fine ($100 plus assessments). I'd say you got a bargain for your extra $250.

Your quotes after such incidents can rise a lot. May be it would be cheaper for you to apply for some of special plans for high risk drivers - http://autoinsurance.hotusa.org
